CHINA TOY TOWN. Four out of five toys in German children's rooms are MADE IN CHINA. Approximately 86 percent of European toy import comes from China. Recent scandals on the terms and conditions of cloth-production have created an awareness of the exploitation of workers in low-wage countries. But how does it look with the toy industry? One industry, which has a market value of 80 billion dollars annually. Small and big global players such as Disney, Mattel, Walmart and McDonald's produce their toys in China. Many workers complain especially about the extremely long hours of up to 14 hours per day, often seven days a week. In China independent labour unions are prohibited and overtime required, statutory minimum wages are rarely paid. Many workers report deductions from wages and penalties.
