MAMA KONG. West of Beijing, in the province of Shanxi, one of the most polluted regions in China, the rate of birth defects is six times higher than the national average. Babies born with malformations are often abandoned by their parents who, according to Chinese family law, had only one child. Mama Kong found her first child 40 years ago on the roadside. Together with her husband, Fan Bucheng, they began to adopt the children who were exposed near churches, hospitals, or roads. Adoptions were not without conflict with the authorities: Mama Kong is constantly struggling to ensure that children are officially recognized so they can go to school. Despite many difficulties, the two who are now over 60-year-old, raised more than 30 children under simplest conditions. Mamma Kong is physically handicapped and also Fan Bucheng is ill. Still, the two do not think to stop.
